The District of Gu Vo on the Tohono O’odham Nation does not have a school. Children are transported to the neighboring district of Pisinemo, where the villages of Pisinemo and San Simon offer K – 5 (Head Start) and K – 8 education. The Gu Vo community has expressed the need to have complementary and substitute academic activities, as well as study opportunities that support learning outside of the school system when a student falls behind or drops out. NAAF’s Virtual Learning Center (VLC) is a program designed to do just that: provide online support for students who wish to finish their education on their own time, whether due to employment during school hours or family commitments, or to keep up with their credits until a time when they can reintegrate into the traditional school system.
